I had the pleasure of working with engineers whose job it was to make systems do particular duties without the use of microprocessors, even if the systems did.

These were applications in the days before applications became apps. The chip manufacturers made chips to suit applications: Logic I.C.s performed numerous partly specific functions, and LSI I.C.s performed specific functions. The manufacturers employed application engineers who produced application notes, specifically to engage with systems engineers who made use of those applications.
